ELLIE MARY Talks New Track 'Bitch Better Have My Money' and Much More [Exclusive Interview]

We got to chat with Romanian DJ Ellie Mary shortly after the release of her new track 'Bitch Better Have My Money'

Starting her journey in early 2017 and playing at several clubs around her home country, Ellie has continued by releasing two singles and performing at Untold Festival in 2018, as a guest of Kiss FM Romania and was the first DJ to play on the debut of the Booth project on DJane Mag's YouTube channel. Her transition to the Tech House scene has begun shortly after, which marked the beginning of a unique, solid journey. Always delivering spicy beats and standing out through her refreshing vibes, Ellie Mary is a promising up and coming act, who's ready to make her mark in the game while writing an inspiring, empowering story.

We got the chance to have a brief chat with Ellie about her inspirations for the creative process of her recent release “Bitch Better Have My Money”, about the female DJ scene in Romania, growing as a person and an artist and much more. Check out the exclusive interview below.

First tell us a little backstory behind the latest track ‘Bitch Better Have My Money’ and its inspiration and creation?

'Bitch Better Have My Money' is extremely special to me! Back when I first started, I was a very different version of myself. My music, my life and my mindset were totally different. Ever since, my sound has gone through this process that's helped me reinvent myself and finally be able to say that 'this is me, this is what I do and how I'm doing it' - so this track marks exactly that: a new chapter waiting to unfold. Safe to say, the powerful women I've been looking up to throughout the years have influenced my choice and creative process.

Can you tell us a bit about your background. You're from Romania, is that where you first got into electronic music?

Yes! I remember my first ever festival experience and how pure that joy of discovering electronic music was. The amazement, the energy, the overwhelming emotions... I got into electronic music thanks to Skrillex and Avicii (who I had the honor of seeing perform) and I couldn't let go of this love ever since.

Carl Cox, David Guetta, Tiesto, Steve Aoki… How do you feel being a woman in a man’s world? Pros and cons?

It can be tough at times because there tends to be a lot of comparison going on, when there's room for everyone to win and shine. To me, what truly matters is the music and what you're able to make people feel through your art.  Yes, it's true, sometimes you do get overlooked, rejected or treated differently because you're a woman and we don't talk about this enough - but I will always encourage other women to not feel intimidated and keep pursuing their dreams.

Have you faced sexism in your DJing career?

Unfortunately, I did and I still do every single day. When you put yourself out there as a woman, they'll watch your every move and they'll come for you.
It's sad that we always have to mentally prepare ourselves to be criticized or labeled, but I strongly believe that this narrative will change eventually
because the insane amount of female talent in the scene is undeniable.

What is the most challenging thing about your career? What is the most rewarding?

Believe it or not, all of us doubt themselves sometimes. Especially in this industry, you tend to compare yourself to others, to be too hard on yourself or put unnecessary pressure because of social standards or whatever - which is challenging. But, at the end of the day, my supporters are the reason why I keep going and they are the biggest reward.

Are there many female DJs in your country?

The Romanian scene absolutely needs more women! As you said, this is a man's world. I really hope we'll have the privilege to see more Romanian women on huge lineups in the future!

Which woman in the DJ scene do you admire and why?

That would be a long list! Chelina Manuhutu and Sam Divine are definitely two of the names on it. Their work ethic, presence and energy are out of this world. It's impossible not to be a fan!

Is there anything new on the scene that’s a must-have for DJs in Romania?

Not necessarily something new, but I think authenticity is key. Not being afraid to have your own style, do things your own way and getting out of your comfort zone. Riding your own wave is what's going to make you special.

What should people know about the electronic scene in your homeland?

I would say that the past few years have definitely been amazing for the scene and I'm excited for where we're headed!

Your genre is tech house, correct?  What do you find most appealing about your chosen genre?

The freedom that comes with being a part of the tech house scene is beautiful! It actually feels like a safe place. People will appreciate you for being yourself and for making your own mark, doing your own thing. It doesn't feel scary - you feel empowered! And that's extremely important for an artist.

What are your musical influences?

I was surrounded by hip-hop, pop and RnB growing up, which will definitely show in my future releases as well. To this day, I find my inspiration mostly in oldschool hip-hop/pop music and I'm definitely going to share more of that side of me.

How do you prepare your sets?

One thing about me: I never pre-plan my sets. For me, it just couldn't work. As a DJ, my priority is to deliver what the people need, WHEN they need it. It's essential to pay attention to the way the crowd is reacting and feeling. You can never know what's coming your way, people's energy is unpredictable, so I always let them 'guide' me through my set and I'm 200% sure I'll stick to this principle.

During lockdown, her Instagram Reels videos were (and still are) a huge hit!  In Brazil, in addition to the many fans you have been gaining, many DJs are inspired by your work. Do you have a message for your Brazilian followers?

I'm extremely happy and grateful that my content has reached such a large audience, it's a surreal feeling! The support never goes unnoticed and I truly
hope that we will dance together in Brazil soon!

In late 2021, you made a UK debut playing at Troxy London and Foreverland clubs. Tell us a little more about this experience.

That's right! It was an incredible experience! Definitely a 'bucket list' kind of thing. London holds a very special place in my heart, it feels like home!
The people behind Foreverland are so hardworking, talented and supportive and it was so cool to finally meet them and work our magic together. I can't wait to go back!

What are your release plans for 2022?

I'm working on new music as we speak and I'm so excited to share it with the world! 'Bitch Better Have My Money' is just a taste of what to expect from me in the future. It's going to be a big year!

Any other words for the fans? What can we expect from you for the rest of the year and going into 2022?

I'm so grateful for each and every single one of my fans, our community has grown so much and I am here today thanks to their continuous support and love. 2022 is all about new music, exciting projects and other surprises! They'll have to keep their eyes peeled on my socials, they'll hear it there first. ;)

What advice would you give to your past self?

That's a great question! I would have a lot to say to my past self but more than anything, I'd like to tell her not to listen to the outside noise and stay focused and true to herself, because she's going to make it in spite of everything and everyone that tried to make her think she can't. To anyone who needs to hear this, don't ever give up on what makes your soul happy! You are good enough!
